Moomooga Palu back for Matatū in 2024
Recent Black Ferns XV prop Moomooga Ona (Ashley) Palu has re-signed with Matatū for the 2024 season.
Palu returns for her 3rd season representing the South Island’s team and continues to develop into one of the most exciting players in the New Zealand rugby scene.
Speaking on her re-signing, Palu said she is striving to replicate the success from last season,
“I’m really excited to be back with Matatū this season and hoping we can make another run at the finals this year.”
Matatū Head Coach Whitney Hansen is delighted to have secured Palu’s signature for 2024 and believes she possesses abilities no other athlete has,
“Ona is a really special athlete, and we’ve been excited watching her journey over the last two years at Matatū both on and off the field.”
“There is no one else that I’ve ever seen in rugby that can do what she can. To be that powerful and that fast – you put those two things together in a sport like rugby, she’s going to have an impact.”
Hansen knows she has an exciting young athlete at her disposal, but also someone who can have impact off the field as well,
“She brings a lot to Matatū in terms of culture and ability. Her impact on the game, not only in the Matatū space but across the whole New Zealand landscape, has huge potential.”
Palu was one of many Matatū players who earned a call-up to a black jersey this year, when she debuted for the Black Ferns XV against Manusina, an experience that will put her in good stead for the 2024 Aupiki season.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better bunch to pull on the black jersey with! Not only the players but the management staff too. I think the experience has helped my game a lot.”
Palu will be suiting up for Matatū when the 2024 Aupiki season starts early next year.
