Matatū Reveals Inaugural Jersey for 2022

History was made at Matatū’s season launch on Tuesday night, as the club’s inaugural jersey was revealed.

Designed by local artist and designer Morgan Mathews-Hale to reflect Matatū’s brand story and connection to Aoraki, three main elements of the jersey were explained at the event.

Firstly, the moko kauae which runs at both the top and bottom of the jersey are the feminine representation of Pokoharuatepō (the mother of Aoraki and his brothers) and Papātūānuku (earth mother).

The four maunga (mountains) are the representation of Aoraki, Rakirua, Rakiroa and Rarakiroa, the four brothers who form part of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana (the Southern Alps), with Aoraki being the highest peak. The name Matatū links directly to the mana and strength of Aoraki, to stand tall and strong in the face of challenge.

The colours of the jersey represent the glacial colours of the central South Island landscape - the rivers, lakes and glaciers. The reflection of the moko kauae and gradient of colour is representative of Lake Pukaki, and the reflection of these maunga that can be seen in its waters.

The teal design was modelled by players Amy du Plessis, Martha Mataele and Tayla Simpson in a live Q&A about the jersey and the season ahead.

Matatū wing Martha Mataele discussed how she was so grateful to be one of the first to wear the design.

“I love the jersey,” Mataele said. “The amount of thought that has gone into this design, and the Matatū brand altogether just blows my mind.”

Matatū General Manager Sarah Munro also spoke at the event, explaining some of the significance behind the release of this jersey.

“In the initial stages of brand development, focus groups were brought together to talk about their experience growing up as a female rugby player,”,” Munro said.

“Memories were shared of both men and women using sweaty jerseys that had been left on the sideline– ill-fitting and dirty. And they all did it, because they were just grateful to be able to play the sport they loved,” Munro said.

“We knew we had such a unique opportunity to form an identity that truly reflected the legacy and pathway this team will represent, and we’re extremely proud to reveal a design for this Matatū team that is all their own.”

The significance of the launch was noted by other speakers at the event, including Crusaders Chairman Grant Jarrold and Bayleys General Manager of Sales (Canterbury) Rachel Dovey.
